I have also enjoyed listening to newer artists that blend their language and culture with Californian aesthetics such as Kali Uchis. Kali is a singer from Colombia who has made an effort to keep in touch with her roots and bring it into her music as well. I found her on YouTube when I was in High School and quickly became obsessed with all of her music. Another artist who incorporates Spanish into his music is Cuco, who is from America, but grew up still very much in touch with his culture just as Kali is.
My best friend is constantly exposing me to new music and lately with artists such as Rema, who is from Nigeria, and Jidenna, who may have been born in Wisconsin, yet his music is heavily influenced by Nigerian music most likely due to his father being originally from Nigeria.
A large majority of my music taste in high school did come from the United Kingdom. For the longest time, I would only listen to the Beatles, until I finally broke out of it towards the beginning of my senior year. Pink Floyd is another band that I enjoyed listening to, yet I cannot remember how exactly I started listening to them. Of course, I could not have listened to British music without listening to Queen which, to this day, is still one of my favorite bands.
Being in choirs for practically my entire life has also introduced me to cultures from Germany, France, Zambia, Mexico, Japan, and much more. One of my favorite pieces that I have ever performed is a piece called Adieu, Sweet Amaryllis which is a song by English composer John Wilbye. When I got to college, I was exposed to much more music through the three music history classes that I have taken such as the Greek tragedy, Euripides.
I have greatly enjoyed getting to explore many countries outside of my own throughout the last ten years of my life and I am ecstatic to see what else I will be introduced to throughout this class.
I liked how you mentioned that part of your music taste came from the UK. Especially the part about the Beatles. I for one knew the Beatles existed but I was not really introduced to them until last Jan term when I took the Beatles online class. Now I can definitely say I am a fan. Also relating to UK music for the longest time I was a huge one directioner!
ReplyDeleteI really liked Sufi Woman by Jidenna. It was interesting because I never thought that mixing nigerian with a sort of popish style would sound good together. It was a great song that I could easily jam to everyday! As a choir person myself, I really enjoyed the choir piece. Choir really can expose you to some great cultural music!

DeleteI don't think the celtic music interest sounds dorky at all. You have such a vast knowledge of music culture from just about every continent (minus Antarctica). Your experience with music is uniqe and such a good story.
ReplyDeleteLiking music from a game (especially when it's as beautiful as Celtic music) isn't dorky at all! Game composers can pour their heart and soul into their works just as any others. I also appreciate your love for Queen and other British bands; they were so much a part of my early life that I honestly didn't stop to think that they were from another continent. I'm honestly impressed by how well-traveled you are with your musical tastes.
ReplyDeleteI love Celtic music as well, it has such a pretty sound and it isn't dorky at all to be appreciative of it. I also think it's really cool at how much exposure you have had to so many different cultures. The Nigerian song especially sounded good to me and I really like how it mixes so nicely with pop music!
ReplyDeleteWow! It's so cool how you love a such a wide range of not only just the popular genres, but styles from around the world! I love the Beatles too! They're my pump-up/feel good music that I like to listen to before performances and concerts. They've been my pre-concert playlist for at least four years! And of course I love all things choral and I love that you can sing songs from lots of different places through choir.
ReplyDeleteIt is really cool that you get to heard music from different cultures. Like you, I did not have much experience with culture outside of mine. I was always interested in other cultures outside of my own. When I was in high school, I would listen to music from different cultures for fun.
ReplyDeleteit's really cool how you listen to different types of religion music from different countries. I really like the jidenna song
ReplyDeleteYou have such a wide rang of music that you enjoy! I used to listen to the Celtic women as well, so I really enjoyed that you included them in your autobiography.
